Julius Malema Calls for Legalization of Prostitution in South Africa
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has reignited national discussion by calling for the legalization of prostitution in South Africa.
Speaking at a Women’s Day rally in Mpumalanga on August 9, 2025, he argued that sex work should be recognized as legitimate employment, with those in the profession afforded full legal protections and workers’ rights.
Protecting Sex Workers From Abuse
Malema stressed that current laws leave sex workers vulnerable to violence and exploitation, with many unable to seek justice due to stigma.
“No one should be r*ped in the name of being a prostitute, and when she goes to open a case, they can’t because they say she’s a prostitute,” Malema said, underscoring the need for law enforcement to treat such cases without prejudice.
He called on the government to ensure the safety and dignity of sex workers, enabling them to report crimes like r*pe and assault without fear of dismissal or discrimination.

Legislative Context
Malema’s comments come as the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Bill — which would decriminalize sex work — remains stalled after being approved for public comment in 2022. Advocates for the bill argue that legalizing sex work would help regulate the industry, reduce exploitation, and improve access to health and legal services.
Public Reaction Divided
The EFF leader’s remarks have sparked mixed reactions. Supporters praise the move as progressive and necessary for protecting vulnerable workers, while critics argue that legalization could fuel exploitation and human trafficking.
Here are some of the reactions;
@musa_mansa;
Keeping it illegal means it stays contained. If you legalize it, you will have red light districts everywhere in the country. It’s easy money. I will even close my restaurant and run a brothel.
@XFactor079;
South African women deserves proper, professional and respectful jobs

@Moshe_Meso;

@Khal_juniier;
What’s next, the legalization of drugs?
You understand that legalizing prostitution will lead to an increase in human trafficking, many girls will disappear as people engage in this new business opportunity 👀.
Women will be viewed as belongings and treated as assets.
This is nonsense, yet another reason to avoid voting for this idiot.
