Julius Malema, Wife Threaten R1 Million Lawsuit Against Blogger Musa Khawula
Julius Malema and his wife, Mantwa Matlala, have issued a letter of demand to controversial blogger Musa Khawula, warning of imminent legal action over social media posts about their marriage.
The letter, dated 26 February and sent through England Slabbert Attorneys Inc., outlines plans to pursue civil damages of up to R1 million. It also signals the possibility of criminal charges under crimen injuria.
Posts Spark Dispute
The dispute stems from a series of messages published on X, formerly Twitter, in which Khawula allegedly suggested that the couple’s marriage was strained by infidelity.
According to the legal correspondence, the posts portrayed unverified allegations as established facts. Malema and Matlala’s legal team argues that the claims have caused reputational harm and subjected the family to public scrutiny and ridicule.
Marriage “Stable,” Lawyers Say
In the demand letter, the couple’s attorneys firmly reject the claims, stating that the marriage remains intact and that no divorce or related legal proceedings are underway.
The statements are described as “prima facie defamatory,” an indication that the couple believes there is sufficient basis to proceed with court action if the matter is not resolved.
Potential Civil and Criminal Proceedings
Beyond the civil claim for damages, the letter makes clear that criminal charges may also be pursued. Crimen injuria relates to the unlawful and intentional impairment of another person’s dignity.
The legal team has reportedly given Khawula an opportunity to respond before further steps are taken.
Blogger Yet to Respond
Khawula, who has previously faced legal scrutiny over commentary involving prominent public figures, has not publicly addressed the latest development.
Should the matter proceed, it could add to a growing list of high-profile legal battles arising from social media commentary in South Africa.
