Confirming the news to ZiMoja, Skenjana kept his response brief. He said:

“It is what it is. I have joined the party.”

Why Khulu Skenjana Joined UMkhonto Wesizwe

Explaining his motivation, Skenjane expressed his belief in the party’s potential to enact tangible change in the lives of everyday South Africans and to foster community development. He conveyed his pride in becoming a member and his eagerness to collaborate with fellow members for positive outcomes.

Skenjane’s move into politics aligns with a trend of South African celebrities leveraging their platform for advocacy and social change. The UMkhonto Wesizwe Party was founded by Jabulani Khumalo in 2019 and officially registered with the Independent Electoral Commission in September last year.

ANC Takes UMkhonto Wesizwe To Court

In related news, the African National Congress (ANC) has taken the electoral body the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and the MK Party to court. The ANC argues that the MK Party did not meet registration criteria in September.

The ANC is challenging the use of the name of its now-disbanded military wing which was founded by Nelson Mandela. It is also challenging the use of a logo which is strikingly similar to that of the party’s former military branch.
