Award-winning South African musician King Monada settles out-of-court to avoid a heated legal confrontation with Limpopo Arts Movement chairman, Mphoza Mashabela. The two were initially set to face each other in the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court in Nkowankowa township, near Tzaneen, on Monday after a dispute arose concerning Monada’s failure to attend a scheduled event organized by Mashabela in 2022.
Terms of the Settlement
Monada, who is known to possess a collection of high-end vehicles, claimed financial difficulties and proposed paying only a portion of the booking fee instead of the full amount. He also requested that each party cover their own legal costs, including those incurred from marketing and promoting the event. After consulting with his attorney, Harry Thobejane, Mashabela agreed to Monada’s proposal, and the musician promised to remit the partial payment within 48 hours.

Mashabela confirmed the settlement, stating,
“Yes, he offered to pay a fraction of the fee, citing that he had spent money on transportation costs for the event. We both agreed to settle our own legal expenses, which was not an issue since this was strictly business and not personal. I received the agreed amount on Wednesday.”
He expressed satisfaction that the matter, which had lingered for a significant period, had finally been resolved.
King Monada’s Past Missteps
This isn’t the first time Monada has ruffled Mashabela’s feathers. The musician failed to perform at the Limpopo Legends Awards (LILA) in 2022, a ceremony organized to honour musical icons such as Caiphus Semenya, Letta Mbulu, Penny Penny, and Sello Galane. His absence prompted Mashabela to pursue legal action, claiming damages for the no-show.
Broken Promises and Legal Letters
Following the missed performance, Monada’s manager, Albert Makwela, responded with a letter indicating that Monada would make up for his absence by performing at LILA’s next event the following year. The assurance was sufficient for the organizers, who began promoting Monada as a featured artist on posters and radio advertisements. Yet, once again, Monada failed to show up without a clear explanation, leaving Mashabela and his team blindsided.

When Thobejane attempted to contact Monada to resolve the matter, the musician cited illness. However, during subsequent conversations, Monada disclaimed any knowledge of the event, asserting that his manager, Makwela, was solely responsible for the arrangements. Monada’s refusal to refund the R35,000 led to a legal demand letter, which included requests for reimbursement of legal fees and compensation for reputational damage to LILA.
