The Limpopo man convicted of the murder of his four sons by slitting their throats stood hopelessly in the Polokwane High Court when Judge Joseph Raulinga sentenced him to 52 years imprisonment on Friday.

Lesiba Kekana‚ 37‚ has been in custody since his arrest in September last year after he killed Bokang‚ 13‚ Keneilwe‚ 10‚ Hlologelo‚ 6‚ and Lekgoledi‚ 4. He assaulted his wife with an axe on June 21 last year during a quarrel over conjugal rights.

Kekana’s wife Lorraine said on Friday: “I am happy with 52 years sentence‚ though it’s sound small. I don’t think that there is a sentence that can bring back my children

Judge Raulinga said Kekana had shown no mercy by slaughtering his children like a sheep.

Kekana said in his court appearance on Tuesday said he regretted his actions. He pleaded guilty to the five charges.

Kekana’s actions stemmed from his anger over suspicions that his wife had an affair. He was visiting his wife in Mamelodi on September 5 last year when he allegedly discovered two used condoms and one sealed inside a pit toilet. She denied knowledge of the condoms. He then drove back home to Moletlane village near Zebediela and killed his children the next morning.

Kekana then tried to cut his own throat “but when I see that it was painful‚ I then tie up an electrical cable on the roof to hang myself. But as I was about to hang myself‚ a community mob knocked at my door and I opened after I heard them shouting that they are kicking the door”.

“The aggravating circumstance is that he slaughtered his four children without mercy‚ without relenting‚” said Judge Raulinga.
