In a startling turn of events, Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, the defence lawyer for two accused individuals in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, is currently facing charges that include attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, contravention of a protection order, and resisting arrest.

The charges against Mngomezulu are reportedly linked to a domestic dispute with his wife in November 2022. According to sources, he allegedly purchased petrol with the intention of setting his house ablaze while his wife and children were inside.

Refusal to Withdraw Charges

Despite his wife’s attempts to withdraw the charges, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) declined her request. The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) reported the incident, highlighting the severity of the accusations.

Phindi Mjonondwane, the spokesperson for the NPA, confirmed the ongoing case, stating, “His wife laid a complaint against the accused for defying a protection order.” Mngomezulu faces multiple charges, including contravention of a court order, assault by threats, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, and resisting arrest.

High Court Intervention

Seeking relief, the defence attorney approached the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, resulting in a judgment delivered in December 2023. The court ordered the NPA to consult with Mngomezulu and draft a memorandum indicating whether the prosecution would continue or cease.

The consultation is expected to take place at the end of February. Meanwhile, the matter is currently being heard before the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court. This legal twist adds complexity to an already high-profile case.

Senzo Meyiwa Murder Trial Continues

Mngomezulu is representing Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya and Bongani Ntanzi in a trial-within-a-trial to determine the admissibility of their alleged confessions. The accused are part of a group of five men standing trial for the murder of former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, who was killed on October 26, 2014, while visiting his singer girlfriend Kelly Khumalo at her home in Vosloorus.

The ongoing trial has attracted significant attention, and this recent development with the defence lawyer facing serious charges adds another layer of complexity to the already intricate legal proceedings.
