In a startling turn of events, Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, the defence lawyer for two accused individuals in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, is currently facing charges that include attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, contravention of a protection order, and resisting arrest.
Refusal to Withdraw Charges
Despite his wife’s attempts to withdraw the charges, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) declined her request. The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) reported the incident, highlighting the severity of the accusations.

High Court Intervention
Seeking relief, the defence attorney approached the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, resulting in a judgment delivered in December 2023. The court ordered the NPA to consult with Mngomezulu and draft a memorandum indicating whether the prosecution would continue or cease.

Senzo Meyiwa Murder Trial Continues
Mngomezulu is representing Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya and Bongani Ntanzi in a trial-within-a-trial to determine the admissibility of their alleged confessions. The accused are part of a group of five men standing trial for the murder of former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, who was killed on October 26, 2014, while visiting his singer girlfriend Kelly Khumalo at her home in Vosloorus.
