Lightning Strikes Leave Several Injured, Two Dead in Separate Incidents

Two separate lightning-related incidents left dozens of people injured and claimed two lives on Saturday, 3 January 2026, after severe weather conditions struck parts of Gauteng and the North West Province.

Emergency services were deployed to both scenes as authorities assessed injuries and stabilised victims affected by the sudden storms.

Dozens Injured in Hammanskraal Lightning Strike

In the first incident, approximately 40 people were reportedly struck by lightning in Mathibestad, Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, on Saturday afternoon.

Paramedics treated several victims at the scene, while those with more serious injuries were transported to nearby hospitals for further medical care. Authorities said emergency response teams remain on high alert in the area as assessments and follow-up operations continue.

Tragedy at Mphebatho Troop Festival in North West

In a separate and more severe incident, lightning struck during the Mphebatho Troop Festival in Mathibestad, within the Moretele Local Municipality in the North West, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries.

The incident occurred at Dertig Sports Ground, next to the Mphebatho Library, where thousands had gathered for the annual cultural festival on Saturday. Municipal spokesperson Mothupi Malebye said severe weather conditions led to about 150 festivalgoers being affected by the lightning strike.

“Due to bad weather, more than ten people were struck by lightning, and unfortunately, two people were declared dead,” Malebye said.

Festival Halted as Emergency Services Respond

Emergency medical services responded swiftly to the scene, providing treatment to the injured before transporting some to health facilities for further care. The festival was immediately suspended as a safety precaution.

For safety reasons, the festival was put on hold immediately. This decision was made to protect everyone at the event, including community members, performers and officials,” Malebye said.

Municipality Extends Condolences

Moretele Local Municipality said it is working closely with emergency services and other authorities as investigations continue. Mayor Masango George is expected to provide further updates to the community.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who passed away and wish all other affected individuals a speedy recovery,” Malebye said, adding that the safety of residents remains the municipality’s top priority.
