Limpopo Police Recover Stolen Nissan Navara After Shootout Near Zimbabwe Border
Limpopo police recovered a suspected stolen Nissan Navara after a dramatic chase ended near the Zimbabwean border.
The incident happened on Saturday in the Musina policing area.
Members of the Beitbridge Task Team were conducting patrols along the N1, the borderline and surrounding areas when they spotted a white Nissan Navara.
The vehicle was travelling at high speed along Malala Drift Road towards the Limpopo River.
Police immediately gave chase, with assistance from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
Suspects Open Fire On Police
The pursuit continued until the suspects reached the Limpopo River.
According to The Citizen, Police said the suspects attempted to cross into Zimbabwe before opening fire on the officers.
The police members returned fire as additional uniformed officers from Beitbridge were called in for backup.
The confrontation did not result in any reported injuries among the police officers.
Vehicle Abandoned On Zimbabwean Side
The suspects eventually abandoned the Nissan Navara on the Zimbabwean side of the riverbank.
They then fled into Zimbabwe, managing to evade arrest.
Despite the challenging terrain, police officers entered the river and managed to recover the abandoned vehicle.
The vehicle was subsequently seized as investigations into the incident continue.
Navara Reported Stolen In Gauteng
Preliminary investigations established that the Nissan Navara had been reported stolen in Brooklyn, Gauteng, earlier this month.
Police have not yet disclosed the identities of the suspects who escaped across the border.
Investigators are continuing efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the vehicle theft and the suspects’ involvement.
The recovered Navara will form part of the evidence as police pursue further leads in the case.
