Beloved South African actress and brand influencer Linda Mtoba exposes and speaks on the harsh financial realities facing performers in the local entertainment industry. The former Isibaya star recently shared eye-opening details about the significant personal sacrifices actors make for minimal financial reward.
Grueling Schedules With Little Compensation
In a candid Instagram revelation, Mtoba described the exhausting demands of acting work:
“My days typically begin at 5am and end at 7pm – leaving home in darkness and returning after sunset. Even on supposed days off, exhaustion leaves little energy for personal life.”
The actress, known for her role as Nomonde in The River, shocked fans by disclosing that an entire month’s acting salary often equals what she earns from just one day of brand content creation.

Brand Partnerships Outpay Acting Roles
“While acting provides valuable screen exposure, it’s certainly not the path to financial stability,” Mtoba explained. “The majority of my income comes from brand collaborations rather than television roles. Sponsorships genuinely pay the bills in this industry.”
A Growing Chorus of Industry Concerns
Mtoba’s revelations join a growing number of South African performers speaking out about entertainment industry challenges. Veteran actor Carlo Radebe (Backstage) has reportedly faced homelessness, surviving on government grants. Similarly, former Isibaya star Gcina Mkhize recently avoided eviction through public donations after financial struggles.
Other actors are finding themselves begging for donations online when they fall ill or are evicted from their homes for failing to pay their mortgages.
