Seven Killed in Mass Shooting After Lobola Celebration in Orange Farm

In a devastating incident, seven people were killed in a mass shooting following a lobola celebration in Orange Farm.

The tragedy unfolded after an altercation between a tavern owner and one of the family members celebrating the event at their home.

Altercation at Tavern Escalates

According to Zimoja, Gauteng Police spokesperson, Brigadier Brenda Muridili, shared that the incident began when one of the victims went to a local tavern in the early hours to buy alcohol.

Upon finding the establishment closed, the individual allegedly had a confrontation with the tavern owner. The victim returned home, but the situation quickly escalated.

It is alleged that the tavern owner followed him to the house, where the lobola celebration was still ongoing. The tavern owner entered the home and opened fire on the family members, killing seven people,” said Muridili.

 Innocent Lives Lost

The shooting claimed the lives of seven people, including a three-year-old boy, a neighbor, and a friend of the family.

Four other individuals survived the incident, with two of them, a 31-year-old and a one-year-old boy, sustaining injuries and being rushed to the hospital.

A 24-year-old woman and a four-year-old child escaped without injury.

Muridili added,

The victims were enjoying a family celebration after lobola negotiations, and this senseless act has left the community in shock.”

Shooter Takes His Own Life

After the attack, the tavern owner fled to his home in Evaton, where he allegedly shot himself. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was declared dead on arrival.

The provincial serious and violent crimes unit has opened seven cases of murder, three of attempted murder, and an inquest,” Muridili confirmed.

Community in Mourning

The tragic event has left the Orange Farm community in mourning as they grapple with the loss of innocent lives. Police investigations are ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with further information to come forward.
