Magashule's arrest

Magashule’s arrest is a watershed moment for ANC’

Professor. Mcebisi Ndletyana, a political analyst and lecturer at the University of Johannesburg’s Department of Politics has said yesterday’s warrant of arrest for ANC’s Secretary-General, Ace Magashule, is now a watershed moment for the governing party.

Many of ANC’s top political figures have been embroiled in a lot of corruption allegations, regardless, there hasn’t been anyone who has since been sentenced to timeless imprisonment.

However, this might soon change following Magashule’s warrant of arrest for his alleged involvement in the awarding of an R255 million asbestos tender when he was still Premier of the Free State in 2018, which only saw 5 percent of the money being put into proper use.

“It is a watershed moment because he is the SG of ANC this case forces them to implement that decision that people who are facing corruption charges have to step aside. In the issue of the asbestos tender corruption case they are actual casualties of their thievery who will be testifying,” said Professor. Ndletyana.

However, ANC’s Treasury-General, Paul Mashatile, has since said Magashule will not be stepping aside pending his investigation into corruption charges.

“The issue of stepping aside is still being discussed however, the SG has since agreed to cooperate with the law enforcement agents and we need to allow him to clear his name,” said Mashatile.

In addition, ANC’s Deputy Secretary-General, Jessie Duarte, said that Magashule had since said he didn’t want anyone putting his face or name on any regalia.

“The SG has also said he doesn’t want anyone using his name or face on any regalia. The NEC has also agreed that anyone who will be attending or in support of the SG’s Court hearing will not be going as ANC members but as per their own individual capacity,” said Duarte.
