A 49-year-old male nurse has been arrested and appeared at the Nigel Magistrate’s Court today accused of raping a 17-year-old boy, who was once his patient, as well as a 19-year-old man from the local community.
According to Lumka Mahanjana, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the accused allegedly made inappropriate advances toward the boy during his hospital stay.
“The boy was eventually discharged from the hospital after his medical aid funds were exhausted, leaving him unable to continue his treatment. However, the accused reportedly promised to provide ongoing care, including delivering medication to the boy’s home until he fully recovered”
After the boy’s discharge, the nurse allegedly visited his home on multiple occasions to deliver medication. Shockingly, it is claimed that during two of these visits, the accused took the boy to a secluded area in his car and raped him.

Community Members Uncover the Crime
The alleged crimes came to light when members of the community noticed suspicious behavior. While jogging, they observed the accused’s car parked in a remote area with different young boys on separate occasions. This raised red flags, prompting them to confront the suspect.
“Last week, community members approached the accused and questioned him about his actions. Unsatisfied with his explanations, they immediately contacted the police,” Mahanjana stated. Both the accused and the 17-year-old victim were taken to the police station, where the boy bravely disclosed the alleged assaults.
While at the station, another young man, aged 19, came forward with similar allegations against the nurse, claiming that he too, had been sexually assaulted by the accused.

Legal Proceedings and Bail Application
Following the allegations, the accused was remanded in custody. His case has been postponed to February 21, 2025, for a formal bail application. The severity of the charges and the nature of the allegations have sparked outrage within the community, with many calling for justice to be served.
The NPA has emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals and ensuring those who exploit their positions of trust are held accountable.
