Gauteng police have launched a manhunt following the fatal shooting of Thabang Masemola, a Mamelodi Ward 10 councillor.
The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon in Mamelodi East when unidentified assailants opened fire from a white Nissan Almera.
Political Outrage and Calls for Justice
The ANC Greater Tshwane region expressed shock at the murder, with spokesperson Bafuze Yabo stating:
“The continued targeting of public representatives is alarming, particularly when previous cases remain unresolved. This pattern of violence undermines our democracy.”

Yabo referenced several unsolved murders of councillors in the region, including Siphiwe Montlha (Soshanguve), Esther Motumane (Winterveldt), and Tshepo Motaung (Mabopane), suggesting a dangerous trend of political violence.
Cross-Party Condemnation
DA Tshwane caucus leader Ofentse Madzebatela joined the condemnation, describing the killing as “a barbaric act that threatens our social fabric.” He emphasized councillors’ role as community servants and called for urgent police action.
“The persistent lack of convictions in such cases erodes public confidence in law enforcement,” Madzebatela added, referencing recent corruption allegations within police leadership that have compounded security concerns.

Appeal for Information
Authorities have urged anyone with information about the white Nissan Almera or the shooting incident to come forward. The investigation continues as the community mourns the loss of their elected representative.
Masemola’s death marks another tragic incident in what appears to be a disturbing pattern of violence against local government officials in Gauteng province.
