Screams heard after midnight

According to The Citizen, the incident unfolded late on 25 December 2024 after Hlongwa returned home and asked his partner to accompany him to an outbuilding so they could speak privately.

She went with him, but family members at the residence later heard her screaming from the room at around midnight.

Relatives rushed to the outbuilding and found her suffering from severe bleeding after sustaining knife wounds.

Paramedics attended the scene but were unable to save her, and she was pronounced dead.

Hlongwa left the scene before police arrested him the following day.

Evidence presented in court

During the trial, prosecutor Akhile Gcume led evidence from family members who witnessed the aftermath of the attack.

The court also heard testimony from the investigating officer and examining doctor, while the post-mortem findings were presented as part of the State’s case.

Two of the victim’s relatives also submitted victim impact statements, facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Nokukhanya Mkhize.

The statements outlined the emotional trauma suffered by the family, including the impact of witnessing the aftermath of the killing and the permanent loss caused by her death.

Life sentence handed down

After convicting Hlongwa, the Scottburgh Regional Court sentenced him to life imprisonment for the murder.

The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

The National Prosecuting Authority said the sentence reinforced its position that violence against women must be confronted through the criminal justice system.

NPA Regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said combating gender-based violence and femicide remained a priority for the organisation.

“Curbing the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide remains an organisational priority for the NPA,” Ramkisson-Kara stated.

“Together with our partners in the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster, we will continue working to ensure that perpetrators of these offences are held accountable.”
