The Sterkspruit Regional Court has handed down a decisive 25-year prison term to 31-year-old Motlatsi Mpharu for the attempted murder of his 22-year-old girlfriend, Mpho Kutoana. The ruling, delivered on May 23, 2025, marks a major victory for South African law enforcement in combating gender-based violence.

The disturbing incident occurred on January 5, 2025, when Kutoana visited Mpharu’s residence. What began as a domestic dispute escalated into a nightmare when Mpharu—consumed by unfounded jealousy—accused her of infidelity.

In a fit of rage, he allegedly:

  • Bound her with an electrical cable
  • Stabbed her in the left thigh
  • Doused her in petrol
  • Set her alight

In a twist of fate, Mpharu also sustained burns during the attack and was forced to put out the flames himself.
