The hallways of Schaumburg Combined School should have been filled with the relief of finished exams, but instead, a scene of utter bedlam unfolded, culminating in a tragedy that has claimed the life of a young matric learner after a bus ran over her. The promising future of a Grade 12 girl was brutally extinguished after she was struck by a school bus during a violent disturbance that overtook the school grounds last Thursday. She valiantly fought for her life for three days before succumbing to her devastating injuries on Sunday.
The chain of events began when a group of four male youths allegedly infiltrated the school premises by cutting through a rear fence. What started as a targeted altercation with a group of matric learners, who had just completed their final papers, quickly spiralled into a full-scale riot. Younger pupils, witnessing the confrontation, became swept up in the frenzy, leading to a situation that school staff could no longer contain.

Matric Learner Dies After Bus Hits Her Amid School Grounds Violence
As educators attempted to regain control, they directed learners towards the waiting school buses in the hope of diffusing the situation. This plan, however, backfired catastrophically. The bus loading zone became the epicentre of the new violence, with the crowd turning their attention to the vehicles themselves. Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona, detailed the horrifying moments that followed. He stated,
“The situation escalated further as some learners allegedly attempted to forcefully take control of buses. One bus driver, fearing for his safety, drove off to escape the unrest. Tragically, in the process, three Grade 12 learners and one Grade 10 learner were struck by the bus.”
The shocking impact brought a sudden, grim silence to the chaos. The severity of the injuries sustained by their classmates caused the unrest to subside almost immediately, replaced by panic and despair. While three of the injured learners were hospitalised and are now recovering, the fourth, a matric girl, faced a more dire prognosis. She was rushed to a specialised medical facility in Ga-Rankuwa for emergency treatment but, despite the best efforts of medical staff, her injuries proved fatal. Confirming the devastating loss, Mabona said,
“Tragically, this learner succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, 23 November 2025.”

A Police Investigation is Launched
As the school community grapples with grief and shock, authorities have launched a full-scale investigation to untangle the sequence of events that led to this preventable death. Police are piecing together witness statements and evidence to determine liability for the initial incitement of violence and the subsequent tragic accident. The incident has raised serious questions about security protocols at educational institutions and the measures in place to protect pupils during times of heightened tension, leaving a community demanding answers amidst their profound sorrow.
