The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed the unfortunate passing of a matric learner from Krugersdorp High School, Retshegofetse Sennelo, who sustained severe injuries during a cricket match.
The incident occurred at Christian Brothers College (CBC) in Boksburg, where he collided with a teammate while attempting to field the ball.
Fatal Injuries and Medical Response
According to an official statement from Krugersdorp High School, the accident happened during a First XI cricket match between their team and CBC. While fielding, two players from Krugersdorp High collided as they tried to intercept a ball.
The school’s on-site paramedics responded immediately, transporting Retshegofetse to Netcare Sunward Park Hospital for urgent medical attention. His teammate, who also suffered a concussion, was treated and later released under parental supervision.

Krugersdorp High School offers Condolences and Support
Krugersdorp High School extended its deepest sympathies to the bereaved family, especially his mother, Olga Sennelo, who also serves as the School Governing Body (SGB) chairperson.
His brother Gomolemo, extended family members, school staff, teammates, and coaches Sandile and Nene were all acknowledged in the heartfelt message from the school.

Education Department’s Response
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event, emphasizing the need to review safety measures surrounding school sports.
“This heartbreaking loss of a young athlete is an immense tragedy. We extend our sincerest condolences to his loved ones and the entire school community. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected,” stated MEC Chiloane.
The department has committed to engaging both schools to assess and reinforce safety protocols for school sporting events.
