Social media influencer Mihlali Ndamase has faced intense criticism after using derogatory terms toward the LGBTQIA+ community during an Instagram live session. The comments, which many have deemed homophobic, left her in hot water as she attempted to explain herself in an apology posted shortly afterwards.
“I would like to apologise to the LGBTQIA+ family. My intention was not to harm or offend with the phrases used during my live,” Ndamase stated in her video.
Fan Base Connection to the LGBTQIA+ Community
Ndamase also acknowledged the strong support she has received over the years from the LGBTQIA+ community, stating that a significant portion of her fan base comes from this group. She took a moment to express gratitude to them for their love and loyalty over the years.

However, this apology came in response to an overwhelming outcry from her followers, many of whom were offended by her use of terms such as “double adapter” and “Mr After Nine”—expressions that are widely viewed as degrading and dehumanizing toward LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Despite Ndamase’s attempt to make amends, her apology has not been well-received by all. Many have accused the influencer of issuing the apology purely out of self-interest, pointing to the timing of a promotional post for her collaboration with Fenty Beauty.
Critics argue that the apology was nothing more than an attempt to protect her brand deals, especially as a polished promotional reel for Fenty Beauty quickly followed it.
“Releasing this video a few minutes after making that statement apologizing to the LGBTQ fans is just so tone deaf, but get your bag sis,” one Instagram user, siba_kinginaskirt, remarked.
This has sparked further debate about the genuineness of her apology, with some accusing Ndamase of simply trying to preserve her business interests rather than sincerely making amends for her offensive language.

While some have criticized her actions, others have defended Ndamase, congratulating her on securing a major collaboration with Fenty Beauty. Despite the controversy, many of her supporters have moved past the incident, focusing instead on her professional achievements.

“Mihlali came back to remind the airbrush-police that they truly are a figment of imagination in the real world,” said tsemenya in a comment, referring to a previous controversy where Ndamase was accused of altering her image next to a picture of Rihanna.
Although the influencer has a history of controversy, her collaboration with such a significant brand as Fenty Beauty shows that her public missteps have not completely derailed her career. For now, though, questions about her sincerity continue to linger in the minds of many.
