The rising popularity of selfies continues to pose unexpected dangers, as former Miss South Africa Kerishnie Naicker learned the hard way after she was hospitalized due to them.
The beauty queen-turned-pharmacist recently shared the story of her terrifying accident that resulted from an innocent selfie attempt gone wrong. The incident left Naicker hospitalized for several months, facing a long road to recovery.
Freak Accident: Tripped by a Tourist While Taking a Selfie
Naicker took to social media to express her gratitude for surviving the ordeal. The incident took place when a fellow tourist, focused on capturing the perfect shot, inadvertently knocked her down a flight of stairs. The accident occurred at Cape Point, where Naicker was navigating the steps leading up to the lighthouse.

“I was accidentally tripped by a tourist who was taking photographs,” Naicker shared. “She walked backward into me while trying to get the lighthouse into focus, and that one misstep sent me down two steps.”
Months in the Hospital and an Ongoing Recovery Journey
Immediately after the accident, Naicker was airlifted by helicopter to Netcare Hospital, where she spent nearly four months receiving medical care. Reflecting on the seriousness of her injuries, she expressed deep relief that she had avoided head trauma. However, her leg injury was severe enough to leave her temporarily wheelchair-bound.
“I’m thankful that my head wasn’t injured, but I did suffer a significant leg injury,” she explained. “I’ve been in a rehabilitation hospital for months, working hard to regain my ability to walk.”
Now, several months into her recovery, Naicker continues to make steady progress. While still navigating the challenges of rehabilitation, she remains optimistic and focused on the future.

A Private Struggle Made Public
Despite her high profile, Naicker chose to keep the details of her injury and recovery relatively private. The 44-year-old beauty queen has been quietly battling through the difficulties of rehabilitation, only recently deciding to open up about the incident publicly.
“It’s been almost three months since the accident, and I’ve chosen to keep much of this experience out of the public eye,” Naicker shared. “But now, I feel it’s time to let people know about what’s been going on.”
