Mixed Reaction To Simphiwe Dana’s ‘Gay’ Status Announcement
Songbird and actress Simphiwe Dana has announced on her Twitter account that she is gay. She has also announced that she is marrying a well-known opera singer; Phumeza Matshikiza.
In a series of tweets; with the first one stating, she said:
“I’ve been holding this in since forever. I’m gay.” Followed by: ” I’m gay.” Then concluded:” I know coming out means Africa will block me. But, after a lot of thinking. I’m ok with it. I’m marrying a woman, and I’ve never been happier.”
She also posted Phumeza’s picture and wrote:
”She is coming home to me today. We are so happy.”
While some of her fans did not take this well, others congratulated her. One tweep wrote:” This is peer pressure.” While another wrote:” The first mistake is thinking that we will block you. As an African, I’m disappointed on that because ‘WE ARE ONE.’ But anyway, you’re human and you don’t have to feel bad for embracing who you are, congratulations on finding love. All the best.”
Another tweep wrote:
“Now it makes sense why you love randomly bashing SA men. You have a problem with men in general. We support LGQTBI movements are persons. All you needed to do was come out, instead of being vile towards us SA men. I hope you get the healing you need.”
To which Dana replied:
“I bash men because y’all rape, kill, and not support your kids. Pls, prove me otherwise. And don’t use 1 individual as an example.”
Other Mzansi musicians that came out this year are singers; Thandiswa Mazwai and Latoya Makhene. Thandiswa took the country by storm in May when she came out clean about being gay, how proud she is of her sexuality and why she stopped dating men 14 years ago. Makhene who is also an actress came out in May this year and announced that she’s dating businesswoman; Lebo Keswa, the pair got engaged last month.
