Mixed Reactions Over South Sudan’s Black Barbie Doll

South Sudan’s Black Barbie Doll, Anyang Deng has been recently trending because of her skin tone.

Through her social media accounts, Deng is indirectly motivating African women to accept their skin colour as this is also the “Queen of the dark”, Nyakim Gatwech’s mandate.

However, Deng is facing criticism on social media for breaking down barriers and encouraging other melanin women to be positive about their skin tones.

Deng who lives in Australia with her family shared pictures of her siblings and her father with the caption “I bet you ain’t never seen a better-looking family” who are just as tall and deeply pigmented as she is.

Anyang Deng who’s been on Tik-Tok, Twitter, and Instagram for a while started trending when she posted a video of herself in a sheer, white dress with the caption: ”It’s the goddess energy for me” which received over one million likes on Twitter.

A negative response  from a tweep commented on her picture with: “She’s black as shit” to which Deng replied with “Well yeah I come from South Sudan, which is home to the TALLEST and DARKEST people in the world. Leave me alone you colorists.”

Others made suggestions for Deng and the model, Nyakim Gatwech to ‘bleach’ their skin to which she refused because she loves her deeply pigmented skin. Deng has become a voice for women who have similar skin tones to hers.

A lot of her fans are hoping to see her on the runaway soon as they admire her confidence although Deng hasn’t mentioned whether she’ll join Gatwech in the fashion and beauty industry.

It is also the hope of her fans to see one of the big beauty brands snatch her and make her the ambassador of their brand because they are tired of seeing Caucasian, black and bleached, or light-skinned models.
