More Concerns For The Eastern Cape As Premier Tests Positive For COVID-19

Following yesterday’s announcement from the Premier’s Office that Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, had tested positive for COVID-19 they are now concerns that the province might soon find itself in a precarious position if certain measures are not taken.

Moreover, the number of COVID-19 cases in the province is surging every day with the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality which is the province’s capital being the most affected.

Many in the medical field have since attributed the surge in the number of COVID-19 infections to complacency as much of the province’s populace is not adhering to COVID-19 protocols as they are constantly attending large gatherings and not wearing masks.

“The Premier is fine the reason why he decided to take the COVID-19 test was because he was experiencing flu like symptoms which then came positive for COVID-19. Moreover, new cases are increasing with the majority in the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality it’s really worrisome,” said Mvusi Sicwetshe, spokesperson of the Premier.

However, Sicwetshe downplayed some social media claims that the province was now incapacitated to deal with the COVID-19 infections which had now prompted clinics and hospitals to turn away patients.

“We will never turn patients away we have field hospitals that have oxygenated beds. We have medical resources to look after the patients.  We have ventilators and we have adequate medical personnel in the province. However, the province is encouraging people to wear their masks it’s a life-saving measure,” added the spokesperson.

To date, the country has recorded 744 732 COVID-19 cases with 20 076 succumbing to the deadly virus. President, Cyril Ramaphosa, has already raised serious concerns over the surge of COVID-19 cases in the province citing that he will send much more needed medical assistance so as to avoid the surge from paving into other provinces.
