A devastating pre-dawn blaze has left a community in Ekurhuleni shattered after a fire ripped through a family home, claiming the lives of five individuals. The tragic incident occurred in the Steve Biko Informal Settlement, where a couple and their three children were unable to escape the inferno that engulfed their five-roomed shack. In a heartbreaking twist of fate, a teenage boy survived the catastrophe unscathed, having been asleep in a separate outside room located just metres from the main structure.
Emergency services were called to the scene late on Sunday night, with crews responding with urgency to the dire situation. William Ntladi, the spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), provided a detailed account of the response. He stated,
“Disaster and Emergency Management Services firefighters received the call around 23H48 on Sunday midnight, the 9th November 2025, for a well-alight shack at Steve Biko Informal Settlement, Etwatwa. Crews from Etwatwa Fire Station responded promptly to the scene for intervention. The backup system was activated from Springs Central Fire Station immediately before arrival on the scene.”

A Scene of Unspeakable Loss
Once the ferocious flames were brought under control by the dedicated firefighting teams, the full scale of the tragedy became apparent. The operation swiftly moved from fire suppression to a grim search and recovery mission amidst the smouldering ruins. It was there, beneath the collapsed and charred remnants of the family’s dwelling, that the five victims were discovered. Paramedics at the scene could do nothing but confirm the worst. Ntladi somberly confirmed the identities, noting,
“All five – the father, mother, and three children – were declared dead on the scene by paramedics. The surviving male teenager was asleep in his outside room, built a few meters away from the main house.”
The Investigation Begins
The cause of the fire that led to such profound loss remains a complete mystery and is now the subject of a formal police investigation. Authorities have not indicated any immediate suspicion of foul play, but forensic experts will be tasked with piecing together the sequence of events that led to the ignition of the fatal fire.
