Musa Khawula, who is currently in police custody, managed to access his social media account to appeal for donations to cover his legal expenses. This unexpected move has sparked widespread discussion online.

Authorities in Gauteng are investigating how Khawula gained access to his phone while in custody. Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson for the national Department of Correctional Services, confirmed that inquiries are being made with Johannesburg correctional services to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Khawula’s Plea for donations

In a tweet from his X account, Khawula wrote,

“I am in no position to call out for help, but I don’t want Ya’ll to do me dirt like Ya’ll did Zuki Lamani when she needed to pay her hefty University of Cape Town bill. If you are in a position to donate some coins, here are my account details.”

He reflected on the events that have unfolded since January 13, referencing a failed apology tour and the backlash he has faced. Khawula also made serious allegations against a public figure, claiming that bribes were paid to ensure his continued detention.

Allegations of Bribery and Corruption

Khawula accused businessman Ze Nxumalo and his wife, former Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green, of paying R75,000 to an investigating officer named Mabundzi to keep him in custody. This allegation stems from a hate speech complaint filed by the couple after Khawula made disparaging remarks about them on social media.

Khawula further claimed that Mabundzi demanded additional payments to resolve his case. Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo, Gauteng police spokesperson, stated that Khawula has the right to file a formal complaint against the officer if these allegations are true.

Legal Battles and Social Media Controversies

Khawula’s legal troubles extend beyond the allegations of bribery. He is also facing charges of hate speech, crimen injuria, and violations of Section 19 of the Cybercrimes Act of 2020. His case was postponed to March 19 due to technical issues with the state’s scanning machine, which delayed the provision of necessary documents.

Additionally, Khawula hinted at another legal battle involving Fikile Mbalula, the ANC secretary-general. Mbalula reportedly filed a case against Khawula for comments about his wife, further complicating the blogger’s legal situation.
