The decision was announced on Monday during Khawula’s appearance at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court. Until his next court appearance, Khawula will be held at Johannesburg Prison, commonly referred to as Sun City.
Legal Proceedings and Attorney’s Statement
Khawula’s attorney, Ofentse Nkgwang, refrained from providing detailed comments, citing the early stages of the case. Khawula’s legal troubles intensified last Thursday when he was arrested in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, and subsequently transferred to Johannesburg. He spent the weekend in detention before his Monday court appearance.

Defamation Case Involving High-Profile Figures
In a separate legal matter, Khawula faced a defamation case after posting damaging allegations against businessman Ze Nxumalo and his wife, Tamaryn Green-Nxumalo, on X (formerly known as Twitter). The couple’s attorney, Vanessa Fernihough, revealed that a warrant for Khawula’s arrest was issued following his noncompliance with a court order.
The Johannesburg High Court had directed Khawula to delete his defamatory remarks. However, he failed to adhere to the October 12 ruling, leading to intensified legal consequences. The allegations included claims about Nxumalo’s alleged affair with reality TV personality Lebo Mokoena, who was previously married to businessman Lebo Gunguluza.
Background on the Arrest
Khawula’s arrest has drawn significant public attention due to his controversial online presence. Known for his outspoken and often polarizing commentary, Khawula has faced various legal challenges over his social media activities. The current case underlines the growing impact of the Cybercrime Act in addressing harmful online behaviour.
