Lawyer Abandons Khawula in Murder Case

On Tuesday, 20 August, Khawula appeared in the Vredenburg Magistrates Court dressed in orange prison attire. The hearing was brief, as the magistrate, Paulette Da Rocha-Boltney, postponed the case to September 2nd to allow Khawula time to secure a new lawyer after his previous one abandoned him.

Khawula had tried to address the court directly on 7 August to understand the circumstances of his arrest, but the magistrate instructed him to communicate through his temporary lawyer. The lawyer explained that the issue leading to Khawula’s imprisonment was a civil matter handled by a Gauteng court, and he should serve his current sentence before seeking clarification from the Gauteng court, as the Vredenburg court is focused on his murder case.

Unclear Civil Case and Ongoing Legal Troubles

It remains unclear which civil case Khawula was supposed to attend, as he has made many enemies through his X (formerly Twitter) account. Just two months ago, Nozuko Mbalula, wife of ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, and her business partner, Michelle Perrow, obtained an interdict against Khawula, preventing him from tweeting about them.

In addition to this civil case, Khawula also faces a murder charge for the alleged stabbing of his ex-boyfriend, Wandile Khambule, in March 2022. The incident is said to have occurred at the home of Wandile’s girlfriend, where the two former lovers were engaged in an argument that turned violent.
