“Gunshots Rang Out”: Daughter Recounts Final Moments

Speaking to the Sunday World, Ntombela’s daughter, Londiwe Ntombela, shared heartbreaking details of her father’s final moments.

My father left the shop just after 6pm and drove to his house, which is five houses away. My younger brother heard the car stop and went out to open the gate. That’s when gunshots rang out.

“We rushed him to hospital but met a medical team along the way. They tried to resuscitate him, but he was declared dead,” she said.

She revealed that her father had been shot in the face and described the murder as a senseless act of violence against someone who gave so much to the community.

Mzwakhe Mbuli: “He Told Me He Was Next”

Renowned poet and activist Mzwakhe Mbuli, who helped launch Woza Afrika onto the national stage through the Shell Road To Fame talent competition, expressed deep sorrow over the killing.

I am very hurt. Manqoba told me he feared he would be next. He said he was being targeted by the same people killing spaza shop owners,” said Mbuli.

He confirmed he would be visiting Ntombela’s family on Sunday to pay his respects.

“A Mentor and a Father” – Colleagues Pay Tribute

Former Woza Afrika member and school principal Dudu Mabuye described Ntombela as a guiding light.

“We have lost a mentor and a father. He started the group when we were all learners. He pushed us to succeed,” she said.

The group, led by Ntombela, was known for its powerful performances and cultural significance.

Spaza Shop Mafia Suspected

Ntombela’s murder is believed to be part of a broader pattern of violence targeting local spaza shop owners in Ratanda, reportedly at the hands of a so-called spaza shop mafia.

The township has been plagued by a series of similar killings, often linked to business rivalry involving foreign-owned shops.

Police are investigating and have assured the family that they are doing all they can to apprehend the perpetrators.

Call for Justice

Londiwe Ntombela made a heartfelt plea for justice:

I am praying that those who killed him get arrested and face the music.”
