Muzi Mthabela Exposes How Some Actors Use Muthi on Set in the Film Industry
Renowned actor Muzi Mthabela has sparked debate in the entertainment industry after revealing that some actors openly use muthi on set.
According to Mthabela, the issue is rarely discussed, but it is an ongoing concern.
‘I Might Be Blacklisted, But I Don’t Mind’ – Mthabela Opens Up
Speaking to The Sunday World, Muzi Mthabela recounted his personal experiences with colleagues allegedly using muthi while filming. He recalled an incident where he had to perform an intimate scene with an actress who smelled of impepho (incense).
“I’ve been on scenes where I had to play an intimate scene with an actress, and she was smelling of impepho,” he said.
He further claimed that some actors would openly use muthi on set, even spitting it in front of others.
“I am not against muthi, but we need to have an honest discussion about this,” he stated.

Acknowledging the risks of speaking out, Mthabela insisted that the issue should no longer be ignored.
“I am saying this knowing very well that I might be blacklisted, but I don’t mind because I’m speaking the truth. Also, most artists will never open up about this for fear of reprisal,” he added.
Film Producer Confirms Muthi Use in the Industry
Backing Mthabela’s claims, film producer Andile Buwa confirmed that the use of muthi is widespread in the industry.
“I can confirm that the use of muthi on set is rife in the film and TV industry. This is because of job scarcity; everyone wants to be on the show for a long time,” Buwa stated.
He further claimed that some people had even quit their jobs after repeatedly falling ill while on set.
“The use of muthi is an open secret, and it’s the survival of the fittest,” he added.
