Tebogo Thobejane Heartbroken and Furious After Assassination of Key Witness

Socialite Tebogo Thobejane has voiced deep sorrow and anger after the assassination of Witness D, who recently testified at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

The witness was shot dead in Brenthurst, Brakpan, on Friday, 5 December 2025, sparking renewed concerns over the safety of individuals who come forward with crucial evidence.

Thobejane: “The System Is Failing”

Thobejane, who survived an assassination attempt in 2023, took to Instagram the following day to condemn the state for failing to protect witnesses.

My heart is broken. There are so many flaws in this system that it has become painful to watch. Millions are being poured into commissions while the people who have suffered under these criminals are left unprotected. Witness D’s death showed us everything we needed to know.”

The actress said the incident reinforced her belief that ordinary South Africans remain dangerously exposed, even when they assist justice processes.

“We Are the Ones Who Bleed and Fear for Our Lives”

In another emotional post, Thobejane accused the justice system of prioritizing officials over citizens.

The justice system does not care about ordinary citizens. Those inside the commission sit behind protected walls. We are the ones who bleed, bury, and fear for our lives. And somehow, we are told to stay calm and stop ‘venting,’” she said.

Calls Out Those in Power

Thobejane further criticized authorities for failing to shield individuals targeted by what she described as the Big Five Criminal Cartel.

What more must happen before someone in power protects the people who actually need protection? At this point we do not even know if we will all see next year alive. This is not justice. This is survival, and we are tired of surviving,” she warned.

Ongoing Concerns Over Witness Protection

Witness D’s assassination has intensified debate about the adequacy of South Africa’s witness protection measures, especially in cases involving high-profile criminal networks.

Authorities have yet to issue a detailed statement regarding the killing.
