The recent heavy rains have eased South Africa’s drought woes but also came with destruction.

Large sections of N1 freeway about 560km from Johannesburg just off Kimberley gave way late Tuesday night after days of battering rains hit the region, officials said.

Two portions of the freeway, which is a route between Johannesburg and Cape Town and sees around 13,000 cars a day, disintegrated around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, said Yolanda Pietersen, a spokeswoman for Road Agency. The two sections measure about 100 metres, officials said.

Crews were dispatched to the area to check out reports of shifting and cracks in the two-lane road and were conducting one-way traffic control in the area at the time of the collapse, she said. No injuries were reported.
