Nigerian Televangelist Timothy Omotoso Deported and Banned from South Africa for Five Years
Nigerian televangelist and leader of Jesus Dominion International Church, Timothy Omotoso, has been officially deported from South Africa and barred from returning for the next five years.
The Department of Home Affairs confirmed on Sunday that Omotoso was declared a “prohibited person” under the Immigration Act due to his unlawful presence in the country.
Acquitted But Deemed Unlawful
Omotoso was acquitted on April 2, 2025, by the Gqeberha High Court of 32 charges including rape, human trafficking, and racketeering.
The court cited prosecutorial mishandling and lack of sufficient evidence in its decision. However, despite the acquittal, Home Affairs insisted that Omotoso had no legal grounds to remain in the country.
Arrest and Voluntary Departure
He was arrested on May 10 in East London after the Minister of Home Affairs rejected his application to overturn his prohibited person status.
Omotoso was later released from custody on May 12 pending a High Court review of the decision, but he ultimately chose to leave the country voluntarily.
According to officials, he departed South Africa on May 18 via OR Tambo International Airport under the escort of immigration and police officers.
Five-Year Ban Enforced
Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza confirmed that Omotoso is now barred from re-entering South Africa for five years.
“He must apply for reconsideration after the five-year period if he wishes to return,” Qoza added.
