Nobuntu Mkhize, the former brand manager at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), has publicly addressed her dismissal from the organization. This follows a widely publicized incident aboard a FlySafair flight in December 2024, where Mkhize was captured on video making racially charged remarks and engaging in a physical and verbal altercation with the airline’s cabin crew.

Nobuntu Mkhize Claims Unfair Dismissal

In an exclusive interview with Newzroom Afrika, Mkhize revealed that the SABC dismissed her without conducting a proper investigation or even contacting her directly. She expressed her dismay at the handling of the situation, stating that the organization’s actions were unethical and violated the Labour Relations Act.

“They fired me without any investigation. They didn’t even give me a phone call. I’m appalled because the SABC’s code of conduct is approved by the board,” Mkhize said. “The board reports to the Cabinet, and the Cabinet reports to the president. So, how could they do this? It’s unethical and doesn’t follow the Labour Relations Act. They issued a statement saying they were trying to reach me, but they’ve never even called.”

SABC’s Response to Mkhize’s Claims

In response to Mkhize’s allegations, Mmoni Ngubane, the SABC’s head of communications, provided clarity on the process leading to her dismissal. Speaking to The Citizen on March 15, Ngubane confirmed that a formal disciplinary hearing had taken place, which Mkhize attended with legal representation.

“The outcome of the hearing was communicated to Ms. Mkhize,” Ngubane stated. “As a matter of policy, the SABC does not disclose details of internal disciplinary proceedings.”

Mkhize’s Controversial Remarks and Legal Action

During the interview, Mkhize also addressed the controversial comments she made about the coloured community during the flight incident. She expressed regret for her actions and acknowledged that her behaviour was inconsistent with the values she was raised with.

Additionally, Mkhize revealed her intention to pursue legal action against the South African Police Service (SAPS) and FlySafair. However, she did not provide specific details about the nature of her claims.

Mkhize’s Apology to the Coloured Community

In the wake of the incident, Mkhize issued a public apology to the coloured community. She admitted that her actions were unacceptable and did not reflect her true character or upbringing.

“I deeply regret my behavior and the hurtful words I used during the incident. They do not represent who I am or the values I hold dear. I apologize to the coloured community and anyone else who was affected by my actions,” Mkhize said.
