Joseph Safra, a controversial businessman known for fraudulent activities, reportedly dies. Formerly known as Aeghatidis Andreas Socrate, he later assumed the identity of Dr. Jonathan Rothschild.

Sources close to the matter have confirmed his demise, though the official cause of death remains undisclosed by his family.

Safra was infamously linked to numerous scams, including impersonating the son of Brazilian banking mogul Joseph Safra. He gained notoriety for deceiving high-profile individuals, including celebrities and executives, under the guise of managing the global Safra Group. Many fell victim to his elaborate schemes, with some being lured into fraudulent job offers boasting monthly salaries as high as R65,000.

Joseph Safra’s Legal Troubles and Allegations

His fraudulent activities caught up with him when he was arrested and charged with defrauding Leon Kruger and his wife, Catharina Johanna Kruger, out of nearly R1 million between 2011 and 2014.

He crafted an elaborate persona as a Brazilian billionaire, Dr. Joseph Safra Sr., claiming to be the chairperson of Safrasa Investments. At one point, South African musician Vusi Nova was also entangled in his schemes and named the managing director. However, Vusi was later released due to insufficient evidence.

After his release in 2023, Safra reinvented himself again, adopting the alias Dr. Rothschild. He allegedly continued his deceptive ways, involving himself in real estate fraud and identity-related schemes. One of his latest endeavours was purportedly aiding asylum seekers in securing entry into South Africa through dubious means.

End of a Controversial Life

Despite his history of fraud and deception, those close to him have expressed a sense of closure. A friend revealed to ZiMoja,

“We no longer have to worry about him getting into trouble again. He is at rest now; he had his run.”
