Raygun Brutal Killing

A male Chacma baboon named Raygun was brutally killed in Delmas, Mpumalanga, on Thursday, 6 February, in an incident that has shocked the nation.

Raygun was reportedly chased, beaten, and set alight at Botleng Secondary School. Videos of the attack went viral on social media on Friday, 7 February, sparking widespread outrage.

The baboon’s body was later mutilated, with his hands, feet, head, and heart removed.

NSPCA Steps In with Reward and Education Campaign

The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has offered a R20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Raygun’s killing. Chief Inspector Douglas Wolhuter described the incident as “horrific” and suggested it may be linked to superstitions surrounding baboons and witchcraft.

Prosecution, education, or both – justice for Raygun starts with you,” Wolhuter said.

The NSPCA has retrieved Raygun’s remains for a post-mortem and plans to launch a community education programme to raise awareness about animal protection and combat cruelty.

Mixed Reactions on Social Media

The announcement of the R20,000 reward has sparked criticism on social media. A number argued that the reward was rather excessive for just an animal.

Some users argued that the money could be better spent on broader animal welfare initiatives, while others insisted that justice for Raygun is a priority
