Nyezane Mass Shooting: Four Men Handed 20 Life Sentences And 494 Years In Jail
Four men will spend the rest of their lives behind bars after the Madadeni High Court handed down a staggering combined sentence of 20 life terms and another 494 years.
The sentences stem from a shooting that turned a traditional ceremony at the Mazibuko family homestead in Nyezane, near Estcourt, into a scene of bloodshed
According to IOL, Phakamani Khumalo, 27, Bongisipho Khumalo, 23, Ndabenhle Khumalo, 26, and Mzomuhle Zondi, 27, were convicted over the massacre in Nyezane near Estcourt.

Gunmen stormed family gathering
The attack happened on October 27, 2024, when armed men descended on the Mazibuko family homestead during a traditional ceremony.
The attackers reportedly wore balaclavas to conceal their identities before opening fire on people attending the gathering.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the gunmen were armed with AK-47 rifles and handguns.
Five people died in the shooting, while another person sustained injuries.
“One of the victims used his licenced firearm to return fire before he was overpowered and his firearm was robbed,” Netshiunda said.
Hospital trail cracked the case
Police investigators made a breakthrough soon after the shooting when they discovered that one of the suspects had been admitted to a local hospital.
Phakamani Khumalo had suffered a gunshot wound during the attack.
“Investigations revealed that he was shot at the crime scene by a firearm they robbed as they fled from the scene,” Netshiunda said.
The development helped investigators establish a link between Khumalo and the shooting.
The other three suspects were later tracked down and arrested at a hideout in Acaciaville, Ladysmith.
Police recover firearms and getaway vehicle
Investigators recovered a significant cache of weapons and ammunition during the arrests.
The haul included two AK-47 assault rifles and 115 rounds of ammunition.
Police also seized two pistols containing 12 rounds, along with a .38 Special revolver and ammunition.
The vehicle allegedly used by the suspects to flee the scene was also recovered.
Police said one of the firearms was positively identified as the weapon stolen from the victim during the attack.
Police praise community tip-offs
Acting KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Major General Phumelele Makoba credited detectives and members of the public for helping bring the suspects to justice.
“We appreciate the thorough investigative work by our detectives and our community members who tipped us about where the suspects were hiding,” Makoba said.
“This is a proof that a strong police and community partnership can go a long way in isolating criminals and creating safer communities.”
