More than 100 pupils from Tamaho Primary School in Katlehong, located in the East Rand of Gauteng, were rushed to hospitals on Wednesday after showing signs of a potential food poisoning. The incident occurred after the children consumed a meal of samp during their school break.
Hospitalization and Medical Response
According to Gauteng Education Department spokesperson, Steve Mabona, all affected pupils were taken to local medical facilities for immediate care. Of the 110 students treated, 98 were released after receiving medical attention. However, 12 students remain hospitalized under medical observation.

“The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), in collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH), is closely monitoring the situation and will provide additional information as the investigation progresses,” Mabona stated.
Both departments have assured the public of their commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment and will extend psycho-social support to affected students, their families, and the school community.

Official Response from the Education MEC
Matome Chiloane, Gauteng’s Education MEC, expressed deep concern over this incident, particularly as it is part of a troubling pattern of food-related illnesses affecting students in Gauteng schools.
“It is deeply concerning to see our learners impacted by foodborne illnesses. Ensuring their safety and well-being is our top priority, and we are committed to working with health authorities to identify and address the root causes of these incidents. We wish all affected students a full and swift recovery,” Chiloane commented.
Recent Similar Incidents
This incident comes on the heels of a similar case in the Free State, where over 40 students from Daluvuyo Primary School were also hospitalized on Wednesday after consuming snacks from a local spaza shop. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of both outbreaks and assess if any commonalities exist.
