Papa Penny Resigns From MK Party and National Assembly Amid Internal Dispute
Renowned musician-turned-politician Gezane Eric Kobane aka Papa Penny has resigned from both the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) and his seat in the National Assembly, bringing an abrupt end to his short parliamentary career.
His departure takes immediate effect and comes amid growing tensions within the party’s Limpopo provincial leadership structure.
Resignation Confirmed in Letter to Party Leadership
Kobane formally communicated his decision in a letter addressed to MK Party leader Jacob Zuma, in which he announced that he was stepping away from all political responsibilities.
He indicated that his working environment within the party had become increasingly hostile, making it difficult for him to continue serving.
Claims of Internal Vilification
In his resignation statement, Kobane accused elements within the Limpopo provincial leadership of subjecting him to sustained personal attacks and reputational harm.
He described the situation as “relentless vilification,” arguing that criticism from within the party had become more damaging than external political opposition.
While he said he had expected challenges when joining active politics, he noted that internal hostility was particularly disheartening and unsustainable.
Reputation Concerns and Media Attacks
The former MP also raised concerns about public statements he believes were intended to damage his long-standing reputation as an entertainer and public figure.
He said his image, built over decades in the music industry, had been unfairly targeted since entering politics.
Despite the tensions, Kobane maintained that he served the MK Party faithfully after being sworn into Parliament following the 2024 general elections.
Appreciation for Party Leadership
In concluding his letter, Kobane expressed gratitude to MK Party leader Jacob Zuma for the opportunity to serve in Parliament.
He also wished the party well in its future political efforts, signalling an amicable tone toward national leadership despite his grievances with provincial structures.
