The father of slain Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa, wants the R1 million he was allegedly promised by Mamelodi Sundowns president, Patrice Motsepe.

According to sources close to the Meyiwa family, Sam said the mining magnate told him in 2014, during a game between Bafana Bafana and Sudan, he was going to offer the family R1 million to support them since they had just lost Senzo. Senzo was shot and killed at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s house in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, in 2014. “Sam told us he was expecting some financial help from Patrice at the time,” said the source.

Another source claimed Sam was angry about the way his son’s name may have been used by Patrice as he was mourning his death.“Sam wants to know why Patrice promised him money when he wasn’t going to give it to him. He told us he’s been trying to contact Patrice, but with no success,” said the source.

This week a teary Sam confirmed expecting the R1 million Patrice allegedly promised him. “I’m desperately in need of his contact number. He came to me at the Bafana game and told me he was going to assist us financially and that the Senzo matter really touched him.

“I think he played with my emotions. If you can help trace him down so he can keep his promise, I’d be grateful. We’re struggling and the money he promised us could be useful,” he said.

Senzo’s brother, Sifiso, confirmed his dad desperately wants the R1 million. “I even read about it in the papers. What I’m sure about is that no one from Motsepe’s office has come to our home to talk about the matter. Nothing in writing has been sent to us either,” he said.

The R4 million PSL insurance policy for the late Senzo Meyiwa has been paid out. Orlando Pirates claimed R2 million of the share and the rest went to a trust looking after Senzo’s children.

Patrice Motsepe couldn’t be reached, but Sizwe Nzimande, spokesperson of the Motsepe Foundation, said in an email: “As a registered NPO, the Motsepe Foundation has established policies and procedures that have to be followed before a funding request can be considered. Furthermore, funding decisions at the Motsepe Foundation are not made by an individual, but by a board of trustees.

“We currently assist hundreds of initiatives and individuals throughout South Africa. We saw the claims in the media at the time of the funeral of the late great Senzo and took it as rumours.

“But if Mr Meyiwa is seeking assistance, he’s more than welcome to make contact with the Motsepe Foundation and the request will be considered in the same way as others.”
