Pilot Missing After Aircraft Crashes Into Ocean During Durban Airshow

A light aircraft participating in an airshow in Durban crashed into the ocean on Thursday afternoon, leaving 61-year-old pilot Andrew Blackwood-Murray missing.

The incident occurred near North Beach, close to Suncoast Casino, shortly before 2pm.

Final Display Ends in Tragedy

Blackwood-Murray, from Johannesburg, was flying a ZS-AEC Extra 300 during his final display when he appeared to lose control, sending the aircraft plunging into the sea. He was reportedly alone in the plane at the time.

The airshow was linked to the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals Global Summit 2025, hosted at Virginia Airport.

Emergency Response and Search Efforts

Emergency services rushed to the scene after witnesses reported seeing the aircraft crash into the water.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that Search and Rescue teams, assisted by private partners, have recovered some wreckage but are still searching for the pilot.

The pilot was in the air demonstrating his skills when the aircraft crashed. Police Search and Rescue teams, working together with their private counterparts, have recovered some wreckage of the aircraft, and the search for the pilot is ongoing,” said Netshiunda.

Investigation Under Way

The Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) has opened an investigation into the crash.

The AIID will provide updates as soon as further information is available,” said Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson Sisa Majola.

Beach Closure for Public Safety

The eThekwini Municipality confirmed that the beach area near Suncoast Casino has been closed to residents and visitors.

The safety of the public remains our top priority, and we urge all beachgoers to avoid the area while operations are underway,” the City said.
