Here are exclusive pictures from the chartered MD11 trijet cargo plane owned by Western Global Airlines that was impounded in Zimbabwe.
The plane was stashed with millions of South African rands and a dead body after it asked to land in Harare during a flight from Germany to South Africa. During routine refuelling airport staff noticed blood dripping from the plane, the dead body found, and the alert given.
The nationality of the dead person has not be established as yet , nor any details of how he died.
The crew is currently detained at an unknown location and the huge consignment of Rands has been confiscated by the Zimbabwean Government much to the chagrin of the South African Government which is urgently exploring ways to get their Zimbabwean counterparts to send the cash to South Africa at their earliest convenience.
“The aircraft currently detained at Harare Airport is carrying a consignment of South African banknotes that was produced overseas as part of the SARB’s annual production plan,” the Pretoria-based central bank said in a statement on its website on Tuesday.
A small percentage of South Africa’s banknotes are printed outside of the country as part of the central bank’s contingency plans, SARB said, without disclosing how much money was in the plane.
