Police and Ambulance Were Not Called After Senzo Meyiwa Was Shot

According to cellphone data analyst Colonel Lambertus Steyn, none of the people in the Khumalo household called the police or emergency management service on 26 October 2014 after former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was shot in Vosloorus. This revelation came to light during the trial at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Monday, 31 July, where Steyn was brought in as the State’s fourth witness. He testified about the cellphone data records of people who were with Meyiwa on the night he was shot dead.

No Call for Help

During cross-examination by defence counsel Sipho Ramosepele, who represented accused number one and two, Steyn confirmed that there was no trace of anyone calling for help from inside the house. When questioned about Kelly Khumalo and her involvement, Steyn stated that neither Kelly Khumalo nor her known number made any call to the police on the day of the incident.

Witnesses’ Lack of Action

Ramosepele further inquired if the other witnesses present in the house at the time of the incident, namely Kelly Khumalo’s mother, MaKhumalo, Longwe Twala, and his friends Tumelo Madlala and Mthokozisi Thwala, made any effort to call the police or ambulance. Steyn’s response was clear – he could not find any phone records indicating a call to the police or emergency services from any of the phones present that night.

Other Revelations in the Trial

As the trial unfolded, several other bombshells were dropped. On a previous day, Steyn had testified that he found two phone call records on one of Kelly Khumalo’s cellphones, which were traced back to a number linked to accused number five, Fisokuhle Ntuli. These calls were made on 2 August 2014 and 15 October 2014, which was just 11 days before Meyiwa’s tragic death.

Steyn also revealed that Meyiwa’s SIM card had been swapped the day after the incident, and the new SIM card was used in former Kaizer Chiefs footballer David Mathebula’s handset. He found eight calls between David Mathebula’s phone and Kelly Khumalo, but he could not determine the callers as they were all “call forwards,” suggesting that the calls were not picked up due to the phone being off or having no signal.

Additionally, Steyn established contact between suspects Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli, refuting their claims of not knowing each other. These suspects are currently facing charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of firearms without a license, and possession of ammunition.
