Police Arrest Nine People Over Mob Killing of TUT Lecturer in Soshanguve
Police have arrested nine people in connection with the fatal assault of a lecturer affiliated with the Tshwane University of Technology in Soshanguve.
The arrests were made on Friday, according to police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, who confirmed that the suspects are expected to appear before the Soshanguve Magistrate’s Court on 2 March 2025.
The killing, which occurred in Block L near the university’s Soshanguve South Campus, is being investigated as murder.
Attack Allegedly Sparked by Community Claims
The incident is believed to have followed allegations circulating within the community involving two children. However, police have not verified those claims.
Ward 35 councillor Kholofelo Mashapa previously stated that the lecturer was allegedly confronted by a small group of people and later fatally assaulted. It is alleged that he was taken from his residence before the attack.
Authorities have not confirmed the details surrounding the alleged accusations that reportedly preceded the incident.
Vigilantism Concerns Raised
Police earlier indicated that they were investigating the matter after receiving reports of vigilantism in the area. A murder docket was subsequently opened.
The case has once again highlighted concerns over mob justice, with law enforcement urging residents to allow the criminal justice system to handle allegations rather than resorting to violence.
Court Appearance Pending
While the exact charges the nine suspects will face have not yet been announced, their court appearance is expected to provide more clarity on the direction of the case.
Investigations remain ongoing.
