A police officer shoots 3 people in KZN leaving 1 dead before he commited suicide.

The shocking incident unfolded in the early hours of Saturday when an Eastern Cape-based Tactical Response Team (TRT) constable went on a shooting spree in the Machunwini area of Harry Gwala district, resulting in one fatality before taking his own life.

Chaotic Chain of Events

According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the tragedy began when three TRT officers returning to the Free State missed a detour sign at a construction zone. Their vehicle collided with road barricades, prompting local residents to assist by calling emergency services and a tow truck.

“The situation escalated dramatically when the constable exited the vehicle and unexpectedly shot the tow truck operator,” Netshiunda stated. “When his fellow officer attempted to intervene, the constable turned his weapon on him and another civilian bystander.”

The violent encounter left the constable and tow truck driver dead at the scene. Emergency responders transported the wounded police sergeant and civilian to nearby medical facilities for treatment. A third officer present at the location emerged physically unharmed.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have launched multiple investigations into the incident, including probes for murder, attempted murder, reckless driving, and an inquest. Police officials confirm the shooter’s motives remain unclear at this preliminary stage of the investigation.
