Political Fixer Brown Mogotsi Denied Bail, Remains Behind Bars
Political fixer Oupa Brown Mogotsi will remain in custody after a Johannesburg magistrate denied his application for bail in a case linked to allegations that he orchestrated an attempt on his own life.
Mogotsi appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where the court ruled that releasing him would not be in the interests of justice. The matter was postponed to June 12 for further proceedings.

Court Cites Flight Risk Concerns
In delivering the ruling, the magistrate outlined arguments presented by both the prosecution and defence during the bail hearing.
The court heard that investigators had experienced difficulties locating Mogotsi to obtain a statement regarding a shooting incident in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, in November last year. This, the magistrate said, raised concerns that he could evade trial if released.
Questions were also raised over the addresses provided by the accused, with the court noting inconsistencies in the information submitted.
According to the magistrate, Mogotsi failed to satisfy the court that he had a verifiable residential address, weakening his bid for release on bail.
Charges Linked to Alleged Staged Shooting
The charges stem from a shooting incident on November 3, 2025, when bullets struck Mogotsi’s Chevrolet vehicle in Vosloorus.
Authorities, however, allege that the incident was staged and that Mogotsi played a role in orchestrating the attack.
Following his arrest in Pretoria on May 15, shortly after appearing before the Madlanga Commission, he was charged with defeating the ends of justice, perjury, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, and discharging a firearm in a built-up area.
Firearm Linked to Serious Crimes
The court also heard that a missing 9mm firearm allegedly connected to the Vosloorus incident had been linked to other serious criminal investigations.
According to evidence presented during the bail proceedings, cartridges recovered at the scene matched evidence connected to murder and attempted murder cases.
The magistrate described the State’s case as strong and found there was a significant likelihood that Mogotsi could fail to stand trial if granted bail.
Madlanga Commission Allegations Loom
Beyond the criminal charges, Mogotsi has also come under scrutiny at the Madlanga Commission.
He has been accused of acting as a go-between for Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and businessman Vusimuzi Matlala, who faces criminal allegations.
The claims were first made public by Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in July 2025.
Mogotsi previously told the commission that he had worked as a Crime Intelligence contact agent. However, evidence presented before the inquiry reportedly challenged that assertion, although it confirmed he briefly served as a police informant in 2001.
Case Returns to Court Next Week
The matter was postponed to June 12 to allow prosecutors to provide the defence with the case docket and for the court to determine a trial date. Mogotsi will remain in custody pending his next appearance.
