R Kelly
R&B singer R. Kelly was reportedly rushed to hospital after suffering a serious overdose while being held in solitary confinement at a North Carolina prison.
His legal team is now accusing prison officials of deliberately endangering his life.
Collapsed in Cell, Hospitalised at Duke University
According to court filings, the 58-year-old singer was placed in isolation on Tuesday, June 10. Two days later, on June 12, prison staff allegedly administered additional medication.
The following morning, Kelly collapsed in his cell, experiencing dizziness and temporary vision loss.
He was urgently taken to Duke University Hospital, where doctors determined that he had received a life-threatening dose of the drug.
Kelly remained under medical observation for two days before being returned to prison.
Attorney Claims Overdose Was Not Accidental
Kelly’s attorney, Beau B. Brindley, alleges that the overdose was no accident.
“That means that, within two days of the filing of his motion, Bureau of Prisons officials administered an amount of medication that significantly exceeded a safe dose and caused Mr. Kelly to overdose, putting his life in jeopardy. They gave him an amount of medicine that could have killed him,” Brindley said.
The emergency filing, submitted on Monday, June 16, in Illinois, is the third attempt by Kelly’s team to secure temporary release into home confinement.
Conspiracy Claims Add to Safety Concerns
In addition to the overdose, Kelly’s legal team cited a sworn statement from another inmate, Mikeal Glenn Stine, who claimed there is an active plot by prison staff and white supremacist groups to kill Kelly in an attempt to conceal alleged misconduct from his criminal prosecution.
The legal team argues that the singer’s life is now at serious risk if he remains incarcerated.
