The three conmen allegedly robbed a number of people by pretending to be prophets and every time, they got away with it. But their luck ran out on Tuesday afternoon when they were bust by shoppers at Jane Furse Crossing shopping centre while allegedly trying to rob a gogo!
After the three were bust on Tuesday, an angry crowd gathered and beat them to a pulp while the police were on their way to arrest them. Jane Furse police spokesman, Constable Thapelo Lesufi, said the cops had to rescue three suspects after shoppers took the law into their own hands.
“When the police arrived at the scene, they found the suspects lying on the floor bleeding,” he said. Lesufi said the suspects, aged between 30 and 50, were from Mokopane. They were arrested and charged with theft. Lesufi said they were alleged to have taken a gogo’s bank card to withdraw R800, telling her they were praying for a demon to leave her money alone.
He said the police had received a number of reports of people being robbed at the shopping centre in the name of Jesus. “At this stage we can’t confirm whether this incident is linked to others,” said Lesufi. He said the suspects were expected to appear in the Sekhukhuneland Magistrates Court today on charges of theft and fraud.
A witness said she was happy to see the thugs were taught a lesson because some people had been robbed of their last cents.
