Revealed: DJ Sumbody Survived a 2021 Assassination Attempt Before He was Gunned Down in 2022

A year before his tragic assassination, amapiano star DJ Sumbody reportedly narrowly survived what is believed to have been the first attempt on his life.

The terrifying incident took place in June 2021, shortly after he performed at the popular Biblos Cafe in Katlehong, leaving him shaken and prompting him to significantly increase his personal security.

According to eyewitnesses who spoke to Sunday World, DJ Sumbody quietly left the venue around 11pm in a white BMW 320i, accompanied by his driver, heading to Secunda for another performance.

The Suspicious Tail and High-Speed Escape

As they drove out of the township, a suspicious white VW Passat began following them, matching their speed and every turn. Realising the danger, Sefoka’s driver accelerated in an attempt to lose the tail, but the Passat kept up.

The pursuit intensified, with both vehicles ignoring red traffic lights. At one intersection, a large coal truck blocked the Passat’s path, allowing DJ Sumbody’s car to get away. By then, Sefoka had armed himself, ready to defend his life if needed.

Security Reinforced After the Incident

The Katlehong scare prompted DJ Sumbody to tighten his security. He began leaving his Menlyn and Pretoria nightclubs — Ayepyep and Top Notch — through back doors without notice. It was also after this incident that Sibusiso Mokoena joined as his bodyguard, a recommendation from businessman Vusi “Cat” Matlala.

However, the additional protection was not enough to save him. In November 2022, DJ Sumbody, Mokoena, and another bodyguard, Sandile Myeza, were killed in a hail of bullets in Woodmead, Johannesburg.

Ongoing Questions Around His Killing

Reports suggest DJ Sumbody’s murder may have been linked to an alleged dispute over an illicit drug deal. The 2022 attack came just a month after another suspected case of mistaken identity, when Aaron Matlala — driving a blue VW Golf GTI similar to Sefoka’s — was shot dead outside Ayepyep Lifestyle in Sunnyside, Pretoria.

The 2021 incident also occurred months before fellow amapiano star DJ Maphorisa was attacked after leaving Biblos Cafe, leaving two people critically injured.
