Shauwn Mkhize, widely known as MaMkhize, the celebrated businesswoman and owner of Royal AM Football Club, has again been at the centre of media attention due to an ongoing legal battle with the SARS over a substantial tax dispute.

The latest court case, which she initiated to regain control of her club, was reportedly struck off the roll earlier this week.

Club Ownership and Curatorship Dispute

Reports suggest that Royal AM attempted to use its player-owner, Andile Mpisane, as a strategic defence in court. The argument was that since Andile is not under direct tax investigation, the club should be exempt from the financial turmoil linked to MaMkhize’s tax issues.

However, the court dismissed the case, leaving SARS firmly in control of the club’s administration through a court-appointed curator.

In a statement, the club argued that the curator’s involvement has significantly affected its operations. The curator’s role was established as part of SARS’ effort to recover the outstanding debt owed by MaMkhize, which has placed additional pressure on Royal AM’s financial stability.

Mounting Debts and Previous Legal Challenges

MaMkhize’s tax troubles are not new. In recent years, she has faced a series of financial challenges, with her debt to SARS ballooning from an initial R12.7 million to over R40 million. This escalation was partly due to a court order that required Royal AM to honour Serbian striker Samir Nurkovic’s contract in full, adding millions to the club’s financial burden.

In 2024, MaMkhize made headlines when her luxury mansion in La Lucia, valued at over R20 million, was raided by SARS officials. The raid was part of an ongoing effort by the tax authority to combat tax evasion and other financial crimes that undermine South Africa’s economy.
