SA Man Sentenced to 8 Years for Attempting to Smuggle Stolen Hilux to Zimbabwe

A 34-year-old South African man who was arrested in July for attempting to smuggle a stolen Toyota Hilux bakkie from Tshwane to Zimbabwe has been sentenced to eight years’ direct imprisonment.

The Mokopane Regional Court this week convicted and sentenced Solomon Chiloane for possession of stolen property, following an investigation that linked him to cross-border vehicle smuggling activities.

Vehicle Intercepted En Route to Zimbabwe

Chiloane was initially apprehended on 14 July 2025 during an intelligence-driven interception along the R101 into Mokopane.

He was driving a white Toyota Hilux Club Cab reported stolen in the Lyttelton policing area in Tshwane. Authorities believed the vehicle was being transported to Zimbabwe, in line with ongoing syndicate smuggling patterns.

The arrest was carried out through a coordinated operation involving:

  • Limpopo Provincial Tracking Team
  • Tshimollo Security and Investigation
  • Shadowsecure Security
  • Tracker Connect

Chiloane’s bail application was denied shortly after his arrest, leaving him in custody throughout the trial.

Court Hands Down Direct Imprisonment

Despite being a first-time offender, the court imposed eight years of direct imprisonment, stating that the verdict should act as a deterrent to others participating in cross-border vehicle smuggling networks.

The case was led by Sergeant Lucas Letlotlo Ledwaba of the Provincial Investigation Unit, whose efforts contributed to securing the conviction.

Police Commend Joint Efforts Against Crime Syndicates

Acting provincial police commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers praised the collaboration between law enforcement and private security stakeholders.

“The ongoing joint effort in fighting syndicates involved in organised crime or vehicle smuggling has proven time and again that criminal elements have no space in our province, and any such effort will be stopped,” said Scheepers.

Authorities say similar operations will continue as part of the province’s clampdown on vehicle theft and smuggling rings operating between South Africa and neighbouring countries.
