South African Woman Gets 40-Year Nigerian Jail Sentence After 5.75kg Heroin Case
A 38-year-old South African woman, Will Jessica Ann, has been handed a total 40-year prison sentence in Nigeria after pleading guilty to importing 5.75kg of heroin, although the concurrent terms mean she will serve a maximum of 25 years.
Heroin Found In Two Suitcases
Ann was arrested at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on 6 July 2026 after arriving from Doha on Qatar Airways flight QR1433.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said 14 large blocks of heroin were found in two suitcases linked to her passport.
The agency said she had been travelling with her three-year-old son.
During sentencing on Thursday, 17 September, Justice Obiora Egwuatu imposed 15 years for one count and 25 years for the second. The sentences will run concurrently.
The judge said:
“Crime does not pay and the law does not recognise emotions.”
Ann reportedly told the court she was remorseful and claimed she did not know there were drugs in her luggage.
Husband Also Arrested In South Africa
NDLEA said Ann was allegedly linked to a transnational trafficking network operating between Cambodia and South Africa.
Her alleged partner, Jan Coenraad De Jager, was arrested in Johannesburg on 27 July while allegedly attempting to traffic 3.2kg of illicit drugs to Hong Kong.
The prosecution said 1kg of heroin was worth about ₦18 million, approximately R220,000 at the current exchange rate.
The case highlights the international nature of the investigation and the cooperation between authorities in Nigeria and South Africa.
The Abuja ruling brings the case against Ann to a conviction, with the two prison terms running at the same time. NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa said the case demonstrated continued cooperation between investigators and the courts.
